Our waste has to go somewhere. Whether it’s a temporary water pump rental or more permanent industrial water pumps, we rely on pumps to keep our waste and other products moving away from us and somewhere else. Pumps can also be a wonderful system to transport materials quickly from one area to the next; indeed, industrial pumps are used for a wide variety of things across many different fields. Common industrial pumps are centrifugal pumps and positive displacement pumps. They’re usually fairly loud though — the federal government puts the noise of an industrial pump 50 feet away at 76 dB, so you wouldn’t want one in your home, even if they are extremely effective.
What Do Industrial Water Pumps Do?
These pumps play an important role in all of our lives, though we may not even realize it. But our potable water comes in through these pumps and wastewater is removed and treated thanks to these pumps as well. They may also provide water for manufacturing or treat wastewater and effluent from these same plants. Thankfully these days, there are stricter regulations on how these are treated, so that the surrounding community and environment are safe and protected.
There are two main types of pumps, which we’ll get into a bit more below. The centrifugal pump has a rotating impeller that pulls water in and the centrifuge pressurizes the water to release it. Fire pumps and well pumps are two common examples of a centrifugal pump.
With positive displacement pumps, one provides a fixed volume of water in and out with each stroke of the pump. Metering pumps and plunger pumps are two types of positive displacement pumps.
What are the Advantages of Different Industrial Water Pumps?
These types of pumps can move large quantities of water (and waste) from different points without much trouble. Of course, there are different types of industrial pumps, as mentioned above, and each has its advantage and disadvantages.
Centrifuge pumps are best used for liquids with a lower viscosity and a higher flow rate. These are often used for more hazardous materials because the lack of drive seals ensures that there’s no chance of a leak.
If you need to move liquids a long distance, you might employ a booster pump; for abrasive liquids, a piston pump is likely your best choice. As you might recall, this is one of the types of positive displacement pumps.
Vertical turbine pumps are often used in deep wells and diaphragm pumps are one of the most versatile choices. They can deal with quite a few different kinds of liquids and if it runs dry, no damage will be done to the pump, which isn’t always the case.
Submersible types are another common type of water pump, and might be the one that people are most familiar with. They’re often used to clear flooded areas — most people with a basement have a sump pump on hand, just in case of heavy rains or snowmelt.
Should I Buy Or Rent the Pump?
For construction jobs or other circumstances where you’ll only need the pump for a temporary amount of time, renting is likely the way to go. It’s cost effective and you won’t worry about having to store it or maintain it after you’re done using it. If something goes wrong, you can contact the rental company and have them come out and look at it.
However, if you’re using industrial water pumps to pipe wastewater out or bring potable water in, for example, it might be more cost effective to simply buy it outright. You’ll be using the pump for that application for the foreseeable future, and though it’s a higher upfront cost, you won’t have to deal with monthly rental fees or negotiating that contract.
Though we don’t always realize it, industrial water pumps provide crucial services that we couldn’t do without. They impact almost every area of our lives and keep things running smoothly.
